Inspection of Public Records Act

The Inspection of Public Records Act (section 14-2-1 et seq, NMSA 1978) mandates that every individual has the right to inspect and copy any public record of the State; this includes the records of those land grants-mercedes that operate as political subdivisions of the State.

There are certain expectations to what can be reviewed or copied by the public as well as procedural requirements that a land grant-merced must follow in order to comply with the Act.

For more information regarding the Inspection of Public Records Act including a more detailed overview, a compliance guide and sample documents for use by a land grant-merced please refer to the tabs located on the left side of this page.

Also the NM Attorney General’s Office Civil Division is tasked with assisting local governments and the general public with understanding the rights and responsibilities under the Inspection of Public Records Act. A link to their website is located to the right as well.
